the start

This is the beginning of a global community engaged to show new perspectives over dance. Dancers, choreographers and photographers work together to give you every possible perspective of their work. Raw pictures from the working process/creation, stage pictures, everything is allowed to bring to you the inside of what dance means for these artists.

Inside of everyone’s mind there is a different definition of dance as an art form. Dancers challenge themselves every day and explore their limits to expand that same definition and make sure that…

“Dancing is poetry with arms and legs”  Charles Baudelaire

The result expressed in a picture shows the tenacity of a moment that was worked out for a long period of time and made seem effortless to viewers eyes.

Thank you and enjoy.

Be — don’t try to become. Osho

Apart by Ricardo Campos Freire

This piece was made under the project Tanzlabor II supported by Theatre Hagen, Germany.

The main idea for this piece was the difference and similarity between man and women. Venus and Jupiter inspired me to search for their characteristics in us, humans. Fragility, awareness, power of will and adaption became the base for the creative process.

Two different perspectives that fit on the same world and live and breathe simultaneously on the stage.

Venus and Jupiter… The largest visible objects in the sky, the God and the Goddess… In Venus we find the inherent duality of the experience. Loving, healing, destructive. Jupiter shows us the essence of the man itself, the search of power, the ego. Are they real? Can they relate to each other? are they strong enough for the “real ” world? Ricardo Campos Freire

Power of will

I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself. Mikhail Baryshnikov

Will take you further, makes you believe in something, supports your decisions and makes you search for new opportunities.

Driven by will we can achieve almost everything and that becomes our way of locomotion through life.

Ups and downs always happen, but a committed individual is able to create more defense mechanisms to face the obstacles presented daily. Wake up, generate motivation, face the day, fight it and rest, thinking that tomorrow it’s a new day and your determination gives you the strength to live it through.

Engage in a positive line of thinking, acting and reacting to life, and allowing yourself a fight card for each day.

The ability of solving problems has most of the time to do with the dedication that we present to something. Business, sports, art… All of these disciplines become our field of expertise if we have the will to be successful, if we have the will to work hard and live for it.

There are no secrets for success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure. Colin Powell

The moment when you step on stage to premiere a new dance program is unbelievably hard to explain. Only you can feel it and live it. The stress, anxiety, excitement and following stomach pain is a powerful mixture that transform this step in something unique.

Picture this: three months of work, three different pieces, a hundred mixed feelings, responsibility, audience… pressure, pressure, pressure until you step on stage and all of that vanishes becoming pure fulfillment for all your senses.

Sometimes we don’t feel privileged, but we should. It’s a privilege to share the stage with so many talented and dedicated people. People that work with you side by side, every single day and share the suffering and the joy of our art form. A bond is created, and we realize that no one has more in common with us than our colleagues.

Yesterday, 8th of April 2017, Ballet Hagen premiered the program Satisfaction and it was breathtaking to see all of my colleagues and friends on stage giving me and the rest of the audience 200% of their souls. The energy and character that I recognize in them was leveled to unprecedented limits. The precision and accuracy were spotless. The feeling and emotion were right enough to make this evening unforgettable. Not only because this was our last premiere together as a company, not only because we are all departing to different places in the world, but, by the simple reason that I missed that unique step and realized how important is to give that step with you guys.

Space and Levels

Invariable condition when speaking about stage movement.

Both of these variables can completely “change the game” when used well. They are presented has tools to create and explore the performing area.

The relation between both is inseparable, space and levels represent the action of moving itself.

According to Rudolf Laban, space is presented as Active space and Performance space. Active space is an abstract concept that occurs when the space itself takes on a significant meaning. Performance space simply refers to the area where the dance occurs.

All changes in space which we see, hear, smell or taste are literally tactile impressions. All our senses are variations of our unique sense of touch (…) Rudolf Laban

Levels of dance mean the different physical levels that the dancer or dancers reach. Floor work (a low level), work on the feet (medium), and jumps that can reach higher levels. There are infinite levels that a dancer can be at any given time in a dance piece, giving plenty of choreographic freedom in any situation.

instant – a precise moment of time.

A second in our life can change everything. A single moment that we never forget, or a memory of an exact happening in time and space that echoes through eternity. The word moment means exactly that, something that happens in a certain way, with a certain timing and your brain retains it forever.

When we go back in our memories, we probably don’t remember everything. We do remember frames of outlined events that occurred in the past.

memory – the faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information.

Zwischen Mitternacht und Morgengrauen-Schwanensee (2)
Valeria Lampadova.Florian Teatiu in Zwischen Mitternacht und Morgengrauen/Schwanensee by Stephan Thoss | Staatstheater Wiesbaden.Germany | Photographer.Sebastian Muth

The information retained in our brain can be good, bad, happy, sad, etc, it’s a reflection of our life as humans. Those memories build up our personality and character. We can be affected by them every time that we remember about a determined occurrence, transporting us for that exact second when that happened.

Imagine that our brain is composed by files. Those files need to be subdivided by themes and a picture is automatically associated to those themes. After research our brain, our instinct allows us access to the exact file that we associate to a passed event.

A picture becomes a memory that you can’t ever erase. It’s there, it shows us that it’s real and assure that the moment was captured in a specific hour, minute, second and it’s permanent. In the end, we get an intellectual memory, or a material memory to stamp the veracity of our moments in life.
